Science is All Around You - You Can Do Science At Home!
While you're stuck at home, don't forget to do some science. What you'll find here are links to a bunch of online resources that will allow you to do science with your students at home. I've curated the links below to make sure they are appropriate for our students and the materials should (mostly) be readily available at your house.
Hopefully this will allow you to enrich your student's education and stave off boredom. Elementary School Students - I have a page just for you with age appropriate at-home science fun. |
Here are some great sites that
have many experiments.
I checked a bunch of them and for many you probably have the stuff at home.

Paper Airplane Challenge
Materials:
Challenge Level 1: Build a paper airplane that consistently will fly 20 feet. Challenge Level 2: Find the best paper airplane design for maximum distance. This is 2 engineering challenges in one. The first is to build a paper airplane that can achieve the goals above. The second is to build a launch rig that will consistently launch paper airplanes so you can test one against the other while reducing human error as much as possible. Links: Here are instructions on how to build your launcher courtesy of Scientific American. Here are instructions on how to fold a variety of paper airplanes courtesy of Fold 'N Fly. Make Your Own Stalactite

Swing a Glass of Water
Materials:
Links: Instructions & Video courtesy of Steve Spangler Science. Tip: You can actually do this with a a small bucket on a string if you do not have the materials to make the board apparatus. Peeps Science!

Extract Your Own DNA
Materials:
Links: Instructions & Video courtesy of Popular Science. Tip: It's much easier to extract the DNA of a strawberry. Follow the instructions except where it says to use your spit, instead us the liquid from a mashed strawberry. Or follow these instructions. Build a Geodesic Dome
Materials:
Challenge Level 1: Build a geodesic dome Challenge Level 2: Build a geodesic dome that can support 5 lbs of weight. Links: Here are instructions on how to build your dome courtesy of Science Buddies. Tip: Test your material (a single paper roll) to determine where it's strong and where it's weak. Be sure to tape the joints well as that is the most likely point of failure. |
