This is an oldie but a goodie. It's an experiment everyone should do at least once. And if you've already done it you can take it to the next level. Today, you're going to dye flowers. Now I know most flowers are a pretty color already, but if you have boring white flowers around, you will be able to jazz them up with this activity. Materials:
Next Level 1: If you've already dyed flowers, I suggest dying celery. This works better if you have celery with leaves (think middle of the bunch you purchased) but will work with any of it. It helps to cut off the brown part at the bottom (just like trimming the bottom of flower stems) before you start the experiment. Next Level 2: Dissect what you dyed. Whether it's a flower or celery, cut it apart and look for where you can see the dye and where you can't. Kid Tip: Ask your parent's permission before you go cutting flowers in their garden or use the celery they were planning for a snack. Also ask your parent's permission before you use a knife to dissect your "subject". Alternative - use a pair of scissors or just use your fingers! Every school day I will post a new experiment for you to try at home. Some may be familiar to you - as they are my favorites from class - but most will be experiments I found on the web that have readily available materials. Happy Sciencing! Earn a Patch
